Abstract

In this lesson, students will continue their reading of the novel (Ch. 3 & 4 for home reading) and student-led literature discussions. Teacher has the option of giving a quiz or journal writing topics. Students will begin Study Guide questions to inform their reading and will begin a family tree showing the familial relationships of Okonkwos family.

Students will gain an understanding of the main character Okonkwo and the personal as well as tribal influences upon his character. They will also begin to understand the extent to which the tribal ethics, values, and traditions affect the people.

Knowledge of family trees and how members are properly listed; details required to properly answer Study Guide questions.

Quiz or journal questions:

(1) What is your concept of the Oracle? Where does she reside? What role does she play in the tribe?

(2) How and why does Ikemefuna come to reside in Okonkwo�s compound?
Pre-lesson Preparation: Copies of family tree and study guide
