Abstract

In this lesson, students will read Ch. 10 together in class, discuss the Ibo judicial system and the purpose of the egwugwu, and take a summative quiz. They will do mask research by finding a mask that they like and include a picture, the tribe of origin, a description, and the purpose for wearing it. Students will create their own masks and include a description and occasion for wearing them.

Reading aloud; close listening; knowledge of how to create with paper mache

Time Frame: 3 days (40-minute days)
Materials/resources: Novel, Copies of Ch. 10 quiz, mask molds, paper mache (paper and paste), paints, and brushes.
Pre-lesson Preparation: Reading of Ch. 10, copies of quiz, materials for the making and painting of masks

Assessment

Quality of reading, discussion, and answers to quiz; creation of masks and description and occasion for the wearing of individually created masks.
