Testing a Statistical Hypothesis
Part of Curriculum Unit:Water Analysis Project: Data Collection in the Field
Abstract help
The students will discuss the importance and necessity of hypothesis testing. After forming a null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis based on their gathered data, they will implement a t-test to determine if they should accept or reject their null hypothesis. Theu students will perform the t-test by hand using the formulas and also using the statistical features of the TI-92 calculator.
National Standards help
Mathematics is essential in scientific inquiry. Mathematical tools and models guide and improve the posing of questions, gathering data, constructing explanations and communicating results.
Use technology and mathematics to improve investigations.
Use technology and mathematics to improve investigations.
Pre-requisite Skills help
Students must have a thorough understanding of basic mathematics including arithmetic and interpreting data from charts and tables.
Teacher Information help
Before this lesson, the teacher should have the students sit with their group members for the project.
Student Activity help
1. The students will read the "Introduction to Hypothesis Testing" worksheet and discuss the topics in their groups.
2. Each group will form an appropriate null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis based on their collected data.
3. Using the "T-test Study Guide" the students will implement the t-test for their specific data and make a decision to accept or reject the null hypothesis.
4. Using the "TI 92 Statistical Features Guide" the students will learn how to implement a t-test using the TI 92 calculator.

Assessment help
The students will submit the results of the t-test along with the supporting data and calculations.
Technology Requirements/Integration help
The students will use the TI 92 calculator to determine the variance and the standard deviation for their data.
