Relevance

This field should describe why this understanding is important for student learning and essential to teach.

Wiggins and McTighe (1999) suggest four criteria or filters to determine how fundamental or relevant this understanding is. You may address one or all of these in this field. To be fundamental, the concept:
1. Lies at the heart of the discipline.
2. Represents a big idea having enduring value beyond the classroom.
3. May require uncoverage (identification of misunderstandings and clarification of them).
4. Offer potential for engaging the students.
