Two teacher driven activities

Two teacher driven activities

Guest Speaker

  1. The teacher will survey the class by asking them to brainstorm a list of what character traits they believe future employers are looking for in new hires.
  2. The teacher will then list these items on chalkboard, overhead or some other visual means.
  3. The teacher will lead a discussion about the traits, emphasizing honesty, integrity and ethics.
  4. The teacher will have a guest speaker come to the classroom and talk about the importance of honesty and integrity on the job.
  5. The students will be given an opportunity to ask the guest speaker questions.
  6. The students will then develop a paper (at least one page) summarizing the guest speakers comments and discussion in class.

Computer Ethics

  1. The teacher will discuss how computer programs are developed: by whom, where, what kinds, time involved. The teacher will group students and have them brainstorm ideas about the development of software and the monetary cost.
  2. The students will brainstorm ideas in groups and then share their ideas with the class.
  3. The teacher will discuss the financial implications of the development of a particular program.
  4. The students will decide on a wage for the programmer and other costs involved in the development of software.
  5. The student will calculate the cost of development including packaging, expertise of programmers, research required, distribution, marketing , and anything else the student believes is necessary.
  6. The teacher will discuss the licensing procedure that accompanies software programs.
  7. The students will define the following terms: software piracy, shareware programs, free ware programs and site licenses.
  8. The teacher will discuss the illegal use of programs that are copyrighted.
  9. The students will answer the following questions as a follow-up activity:
  • If a program cost $29.95 at Computer World, how many programs would have to be sold to pay all the fees that were discussed above?
  • If you were hired as a programmer to develop software that would have a price tag of $29.95 and would receive 5% of all packages sold, how much would you make if the store sold 500 copies?
  • If Jane Banks buys one copy of the software above and gives it to 5 of her friends, how much money would the programmer lose?
  • If Jane Banks 5 friends give the program to 5 of their friends, how many people will have "stolen" the software. How much money would the programmer have lost?
  • Write a one page paper describing the need for copyright laws based on the financial outcomes you have just calculated.
