Abstract help

Students will comprehend the relationship between the states of matter and the molecular activity of that matter. Additionally, they will determine factors influencing changes of state.

National Standards help

Physical Science Content Standard B: As a result of activities, students should develop an understanding of properties and changes of properties in matter.

Pre-requisite Skills help

Internet access skills; reference skills; Microsoft Office Power Point Skills or other presentation tools skills.

Teacher Information help

1. Students research the states of matter and the changes of state with internet sites and other chemistry references.

2. Students will construct a Power Point presentation based on the information researched.

3. The Power Point presentation should include graphic representation of the molecular arrangements involved in the states and changes of state.

4. Vocabulary and research resources are included in the student activity.

5. Students may work individually or in pairs, as computer availability allows. If Microsoft Office Power Point (or other presentation software) is not available, the same requirements may be accomplished on poster board.

6. Students will be exercising the following workforce competencies:
a) Information Manager
b) Effective Communicator
c) Systems Manager
d) Cooperative Workers

Student Activity help

1. Students will use references, both internet sites and print matter, to determine molecular arrangements involved in the states of matter and changes of state. They will display this information in a Power Point presentation.

2. Students will need to comprehend the following vocabulary terms:

d) energy
e) solid
f) vibration
g) liquid
h) (latent) heat of fusion
i) gas

4. Students may work individually or in pairs.

Assessment help

Student Power Point presentations should be evaluated for completeness and correctness by using a 1-5 rubric for each category required, such as:
• definition of the states of matter, in terms of molecular arrangement
• graphic display of the molecular arrangement of each of the states
• definition of each of the changes of state
• common examples of substances involved in changes of state

• Consider how the water cycle, which supplies the earth with a continuous source of water, relates to this lesson.
