
Lesson 4 Title: Transfer of Heat Energy
Abstract help
Students will explain the three methods of heat transfer, conduction, convection, and radiation. They will also cite common examples of each method and explain applications of heat transfer.

1. Students will use internet and text references to determine the methods of heat transfer, examples, and applications of these methods. They will demonstrate knowledge of this information by means of a demonstration and oral explanation of a selected means of transfer.

• additional chemistry references
• poster board, colored pencils
• a variety of materials which students may request for demonstrations (hair dryer, balloons, metal and plastic spoons, iron, etc.)

5. Students will research the methods of heat transfer from the resource list above.
6. They are to select one of the methods to demonstrate to the class.
7. They should provide an actual demonstration of the method of transfer and accompanying graphic displays to explain the manner in which heat is transferred.
8. Students should also provide the teacher with a predetermined number of questions about the heat transfer method demonstrated. These questions will be compiled by the teacher for a quiz about this topic.
9. The following Workforce Competencies will be stressed:
1) Information Manager
2) Effective Communicator
3) Resource Manager
4) Cooperative Workers
10. Classroom Management: Students should work in pairs or teams and may be permitted to select their transfer method to demonstrate or may have the topic assigned. This will allow for an equal distribution of each of the three methods.
One class period should be allotted for research, after which the students should provide the teacher with a list of necessary materials. It might be suggested that students utilize their own materials whenever possible. Another class period will be necessary for students to set up demonstrations and prepare the oral presentation. The subsequent class period would be for the actual demonstrations. The quiz should be announced for a later date.
