Abstract help

This activity is a visit to a wetland ecosystem and how to read maps. A visit to Rose Bay area on foot, sea and air. Learn the facts of the topography network and the environement around the Rose Bay area. This activity will take you through the native lands and plants of the area that the Native Americans might have seen.

The objective of this activity is to give students insight into the topography from the realistic point of view of today's scientist. Students will learn how to use topography for their benefit of the future generations and to the generations of today.

Students will need to know the following vocabulary: Vension, sea cows, manatees, terrapins, tortoises, fruits, sea grasses, cacti, uplands, wetlands, hammock, marshes, bays, estuaries, ecomonics, politics, belief, mythology, projectile, attribute, globes, maps, latitude, longitude, hemisphere, grid system, symbols, mountians, hills, plateus, plains, oceans, seas, bays, gulfs, lakes, and rivers.

Set up a time to have the St. John River Management or zoning board people come talk and walk you through the Park. Crosswords, Internet searches, map searches for the student's home, the park, and other familar places. Vocabulary games, mapping games and assignments, geography terms and forms. Mapping skills can be brought into here at this time, try orienteering.

Student Activity help

Use a CDL- can play several line games, map graphics.

Computer and internet access do a research project on topography

Learn the words do word games, crosswords, write the word and definition,put in sentences use them in class.

Assessment help

Assessment can be done through pre and posttest, portfolio's, notebooks, made up books to read to others, crossword puzzles that they make or you with new names and old, quizzes and tests.

Enrichment / Alternative Activity help

Go to Rose Bay map the area, use a CDL, plot areas, see how the areas change over the course of the year, map a spit on the ground and watch it. Don't forget all the crossword puzzles, stories, and books to read and write.
