Abstract help

The instructor will teach the students about the Metric System. This with the use of technology it will enhance their knowledge of the Metric System, and how they can use technology (e.g. computer, micrometer, and the Scientific Calculator) to solve every day problems.
The students will do research on the Internet, searching for information on the Metric System.

Monitor and reflect on their mathematical thinking in solving problems

Pre-requisite Skills help

The students should be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using a Scientific Calculator. The time frame can be adjusted according to the ability of your students. The students will be asked to solve mathematical problems encountered on a daily basis.
The students will use the computer, it is very important that they know keyboarding skills, and have the knowledge and understanding of working with the mouse. By having this skill the students will feel more comfortable and at ease. This will help them search the net quicker and with more confidence, while searching for information on the Metric System. The students should have the basic skills for researching subjects on the Internet.

Teacher Information help

This lesson is set up for a 45-minute period in the Computer Lab for 3 to 5 days.
Textbook: Mathematics: Applications and Connections, by Glencoe.
Video explaining all about the Metric System, and a guide on note taking.

Teacher will sign up for the computer lab well in advance.

Student Activity help

Each student will be given take home worksheets of which they can practice scientific notation and work on problems in the Metric System.
The students will be given a sheet that has several items listed. They are to measure in meters, centimeters and millimeters where applicable, and record the measurement on the sheet of paper.
Pairs of students model .53 divided by 8 with base ten blocks. Have them show how they would write the quotient. Then have them use their calculators to verify their answer.

Assessment help

The teacher will observe and circulate around the classroom daily, checking the progress of the students.
Students will be given handouts, worksheets, on terms and problems, and little tests to check their understanding. When the lesson is over each student will be evaluated by solving a problem in the Metric System.

Enrichment / Alternative Activity help

Give a list of Mass and Capacity in the Metric System.
Have the students write the unit of measure that is appropriate to the side of each item.
The students given a list of items of length, mass and capacity need to decide what type of measurement is involved, then choose the best unit of measure and write it down.

Technology Requirements/Integration help

Select and apply technology tools for research, information analysis, problem-solving, and decision-making.
Students will use the software available on the Metric System, by running it on the computer.
