Abstract
Students Create Timeline from late 1800s to 2000 to mark
significant inventors' inventions.
Lesson fundamental understandings: Essential
Questions: How are some inventions interrelated?
Standards
National Standards NS 7.5.7 identify the
contributions of the inventors and discoverers, including: · Thomas
Edison · Wright Brothers · Alexander Graham Bell · George Washington
Carver

Lesson
Prerequisite Skills
: Students should have a basic understanding of research via the
Internet, as well as the ability to conduct research using library
resources.
Teacher
Information/Situations/Setting/Time · Computer lab,
classroom computer, library resources ·
Library of Congress http://www.loc.gov
· Internet search engines · Monitor student
writing and projects during informal observations and informal
checks for understanding by teacher and peers · Class time
needed: Approximately 1.5 hours plus homework
Assessment
They will complete the 5ws (who, what, when, where, why) for
their assigned inventions and be able to share this information with
the class.
Student Activity/Tasks Refer to the
following website for background
information. http://inventors.about.com/science/inventors/library/weekly/aa121599a.htm
Students
are given a 3-foot piece of adding machine tape. They are asked to
evenly divide and mark the tape in decades starting with 1890 up to
the year 2000. Students are introduced to significant inventions
that can be marked on this timeline. These can range from the
following: Automobile, airplane, radio, refrigerator, toaster,
television, computer, telephone, cell phone, phonograph, CD player,
or others that teachers and/or students brainstorm.
After completion of
the timeline, students will be asked to work in cooperative groups
(five groups), and each group will research two of these inventions
via print and technology (www.invent.org/book/book-index.html).
