Abstract

Students will find the effectiveness and usefulness of using decimals, fractions, and percents in our lives.

Lesson fundamental understandings:
Essential Questions:

How would your daily life be different if we did not have decimals, fractions or percents?

Standards

National Standards

Number and Operations Compare and order fractions, decimals, and percnets efficiently using approximate locations on a number line.

State Standards

Nevada Mathematics content Standards and Indicators of Progress- Grade 7 1.7.6 Compare and order groups containing a mix of fractions, percents, and decimals (e.g., on a number line)

Lesson

Prerequisite Skills

Students will have prior knowledge of how to work with fractions, decimals, and percents in daily life.

Teacher Information/Situations/Setting/Time

Ask, “How would your daily life be different if we did not have decimals, fractions or percents?”

Lead a short discussion on fractions, decimals and percents. Briefly cover the use of these number representations in daily life.

After initial discussion, students will write a paper to explain differences and give reasoning.

After the writing process is complete, the class will discuss if a new number system would be created.

The teacher will decide whether students will work on this activity individually or in groups.

Setting/ Time
This lesson will take one 90-minute or two 45 minute periods.

Assessment

Assessment will be continuous through out the lesson based on questioning, discussions and modeling.

Papers would be graded according to a rubric based on differences created with examples of those differences.

Student Activity/Tasks

-Students will discuss as a class what fractions, decimals, and percents are and how they are used in daily life.
- Students will discuss as a class or small group the life difference example.
- Students will share their methods and process of reaching the solution.
- Teacher will monitor student progress and guide as needed.
- Teacher will help students as necessary.
- Students will demonstrate and explain possible solutions. Class will discuss possible methods.
- Students will explain logic.

Enrichment/Alternate Activity:

Research might be done on how fractions, decimals, percents were dealt with in early civilizations.

Cross-Curricular:

Social Studies- Early civilizations had number systems, but not based with numbers less than zero. Students will discover how these were used.

Technology Requirements/Tools/Materials

Websites will be used to research early civilizations as well as when fractions, decimals, percents were introduced into life.
