Abstract

This is an introductory unit to the author, the Ibo people, and their traditions.

Lesson fundamental understandings and essential questions:
Students will gain an understanding of the background of the author, the lifestyle of the pre-colonial Ibo people, and the strength and unity provided by adherence to their ethics, values and traditions.

National Standard(s): Students develop an understanding of and respect for diversity in language use, patterns, and dialects across cultures, ethnic groups, geographic regions, and social roles.
Technology Standard(s): 3a) Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity. 3b) Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, prepare publications, and produce other creative works. 5b) Students use technology tools to process data and report results.

State Standards

State Standard(s): Students read to comprehend, interpret, and evaluate literature from a variety of authors, cultures, and times.
CCSD Local Standards: 5.3 - The student will analyze cultural aspects evident in African writing. 5.4 – The student will interpret the psychological motivations of characters in African literature. 5.5 – The student will assess the ethics and values portrayed in African literature.


Lesson

Prerequisite Skills

Use of the Internet for research; knowledge of how to use PowerPoint, Slideshow, and/or computer and monitors for whole group instruction.

Teacher Information/Situations/Setting/Time

Time frame – 3 days (40-minute days)
Materials/resources – Achebe Scavenger Hunt sheet, copies of Achebe essays, mini-research topics (kola nut, alligator pepper, and palm wine; storytelling; use of masks; plural marriage; geographical location of the Ibo in Nigeria; polytheism)

Pre-lesson Preparation: Copies of Achebe Scavenger Hunt sheet; Internet Access; formation of groups; copies of mini-research topics

Assessment

Completion of scavenger hunt sheet; ability to state Achebe’s belief system as stated in each essay; group presentation of each mini-research topic

Student Activity/Tasks

Students will begin by doing individual Internet research on stated sites to complete Achebe Scavenger Hunt sheet.

1) By groups, students will be given one of three Achebe essays to read and discuss. From this discussion, students will generate a list of Achebe’s beliefs that they will share with whole group.

2) By groups, students will be given mini-research topics which will provide them with a basic understanding of what is valued in the Ibo society. Their findings will then be presented to whole group.
