Abstract

The students connect the Pilgrims’ experience of the Mayflower Compact with current “laws” of the school lunchroom.

Lesson fundamental understandings:
Essential Questions:

Students will develop an understanding for the importance of laws. They will be able to articulate how laws benefit each one personally.
Why did the Pilgrims create the Mayflower Compact?
Why was it important for everyone to agree to it?
Why does the school need lunchroom “laws”?

Standards

National Standards

What are the pruposes of rules and laws? How can you evaluate rules and laws? Why is it important for americans to share ertain values, principals, and beliefs? How can people work together to promote the values and principals of American democracy? State Standard(s): (Civics 1.3.1) Identify examples of rules, laws, and authorities that keep people safe and property secure. (SS4.1) Identify reasons why communities require laws.

Lesson

Prerequisite Skills

Knowledge of why Pilgrims came to America. Knowledge of school “laws" Students will review differences between laws, rules, and values.

Teacher Information/Situations/Setting/Time

Time—50 minutes
Materials
1. Replicas of the Mayflower Compact.
2. List of lunchroom “laws”
3. Certificate of Agreement
Create replicas of Mayflower Compact
Prepare Certificate of Agreement
Display lunchroom “laws” ("laws" have been pre-determined by administrator)

Assessment

Observation of lunchroom behavior after lesson.
Classroom discussion about improvements in lunchroom behavior.
Students list reasons why it was important for all on Mayflower to sign document before they disembarked.
Discussion of how signing "Certificate of Agreement" improved lunchroom behavior.

Preview replica of Mayflower Compact
Discuss and clarify vocabulary
Reread present day translation
Review conditions of Mayflower Compact
Discuss lunchroom “laws”
Present the Certificate of Agreement
Forced total agreement—all must sign before going to lunch
