Abstract

This lesson will demonstrate the consequences of breaking laws.

Lesson fundamental understandings:
Essential Questions:

The consequence of obeying the law is freedom from possible harm.
How do laws secure freedom?
What are consequences of breaking laws?
What are consequences of obeying laws?


Standards

National Standards

What are important rights in the United States? What are important responsibilities of Americans? Where do people in government get the authority to make, apply, and enforce rules and laws and manage disputes about them? What are the purposes of rules and laws?

State Standards

(Civics1.3.1) Identify examples rules, laws, and authorities that keep people safe and property secure. (Civics 5.3.4) Identify an individual’s rights within the classroom.


Lesson

Prerequisite Skills

Knowledge of pedestrian laws.

Teacher Information/Situations/Setting/Time

Time—50 minutes
Materials/Resources—copy of jaywalking poster
Print jaywalking poster

Assessment

Role-play consequence of obeying and disobeying a classroom rule.

Student Activity/Tasks

Display jaywalking poster and discuss what is happening. Walk class to front parking lot. Have two students demonstrate proper way to cross parking lot. Have one student demonstrate improper way to cross parking lot. Return to class and do role-play assessment.

Enrichment/Alternate Activity:

Invite school police to discuss pedestrian safety.

Cross-Curricular:

(LA 9.1) Use specific vocabulary and apply Standard English to communicate ideas. Students will creaate a poster illustrating a lunchroom "law".
