Students will continue on their quest to understand the role of Bacteria in the world. Students will have the opportunity to strengthen the learning they have completed in part one, solidifying their research in a creative manner. In the previous lesson, students researched a bacteria assigned by the instructor. In this lesson, students will build on their previous assignment by creating a "Most Wanted Poster" of their bacteria.
Living organisms have the capacity to produce populations of infinite size, but environments and resources are finite. This fundamental tension has profound effects on the interactions between organisms. Human beings live within the world's ecosystems. Increasingly, humans modify ecosystems as a result of population growth, technology, and consumption. Human destruction of habitats through direct harvesting, pollution, atmospheric changes, and other factors isthreatening current global stability, and if not addressed, ecosystems will be irreversibly affected.
In addition to the basic computer operation skills needed in the previous lesson, students will also either need to have or develop desktop publishing skills. Artistic ability at any level will be put to use. Students will need to be familiar or learn a software program such as Kid Pix, Print Shop Deluxe, Adobe Pagemaker or In Effect, or other similar graphic designing program. Virtually any program that allows the student to create a poster on the computer can be used. Even the newer versions of Microsoft Word will allow the student to complete the project, but the student's creative freedom will be limited to the limitations of the graphic abilities of the program. Should the instructor not have the experience in the above mentioned suggested software programs, an alternate form of this assignment is suggested below.
The project that I have used in this project is a "Most Wanted" poster, just like the ones used by the USPS. As a matter of fact, I often print a few real ones so the students may use them for a template. Of course, the student will create their own, and usually have a great time. The Handout that I use is listed below in the Student section.
In assessing the project, I look for the following items in determining the student (or group) grade. Below are the "categories" that I have all students use on their poster for uniformity both for convenience/clarity for the student and ease in grading. The explanations in parantheses are what I am asking the students to discuss on their Most Wanted posters - Representative(cartoon) picture of their bacteria - Description (Correct Shape) - Name / aliases - Crime (disease caused) - Effects of Crime (symptoms of disease) - M.O. {Modus Opporandi} ( how is the bacteria transmitted) - Defense against this Criminal (antibiotics) - Warning (create a catchy phrase to warn others about your bacterial criminal)
Bacteria's Most Wanted - Part 2 They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Now that you are experts on your bacterial criminal it's time to spread the word! Warn your family, your friends - even your worst enemy about the dangerous microscopic invader you have uncovered! In today's assignment you will be creating a Most Wanted Poster warning others about what you know. Use the examples in class to make your own poster and be creative. You will use the computers and printer to create a colorful poster to be displayed in "the hall of shame". The categories that you should include are as follows: - Representative(cartoon) picture of their bacteria - Description (Correct Shape) - Name / aliases - Crime (disease caused) - Effects of Crime (symptoms of disease) - M.O. {Modus Opporandi} ( how is the bacteria transmitted) - Defense against this Criminal (antibiotics) - Warning (create a catchy phrase to warn others about your bacterial criminal) Remember, education is the best line of defense against these nasty critters - spread the word!
Computers with graphics program such as Kid Pix, Print Shop Deluxe, Adobe Pagemaker or In Effect, or other similar graphic designing program. Virtually any program that allows the student to create a poster on the computer can be used. Even the newer versions of Microsoft Word will allow the student to complete the project, but the student's creative freedom will be limited to the limitations of the graphic abilities of the program. Color Printer LOTS OF PATIENCE!!!!
