At the completion of this lesson, students will have a greater appreciation of the diversity of Plants in our world. Students will see the importance of plants in everyday life, their neccessity in our society and their beneficial by products, which we have come to depend upon. Students will research the uses of plants in everyday life, and will demonstrate this knowledge in the form of a web page. Students will also explain their choices within their web pages. The students will become familiar with Internet search engine functions, saving graphics, creating a web page complete with graphics, text and a "hot link" to their email address. This will all take place simulataneously with the student learning with regard to the plant kingdom and the importance of our preserving our plant resources.
THE INTERDEPENDENCE OF ORGANISMS Human beings live within the world's ecosystems. Increasingly, humans modify ecosystems as a result of population growth, technology, and consumption. Human destruction of habitats through direct harvesting, pollution, atmospheric changes, and other factors is threatening current global stability, and if not addressed, ecosystems will be irreversibly affected.
In this first lesson, students will need to be familiar with the function of an Internet search engine. Students must know how to save data to a disk or Hard Drive Limited typing skills Basic computer operation
In this lesson, students will be acquiring images representative of plant use from the internet. These images need to be saved either on a floppy disk or on the Hard Drive (I recommend a disk so the student is responsbile for keeping their own data and it won't be accidently erased by another studnet). These images will be used in pt. 2 of the lesson to create an "electronic collage" (web page) showing the many uses of plants. If students are not familiar with saving images from the web, all the instruction that is truly needed is demonstration of the "right click" (PC's) or "click and hold" (mac) that will bring up the pop up menu allowing students to "save image as". Once they have mastered this, they are on their way, and most students have no problem at all.
Assessment in this initial lesson is somewhat simple. Students are to create a table listing 10-15 uses of plant (depending on how much time you have). In this table they should write down the uses of plants (column 1), and the example of each one they anticipate finding (column 2). In column 3, they will check off each one they have found. I simply assign 1 pt each, and at the end of the period, tally up how many points they get.
Flower Power - Part 1 Today you will be finding out just how important plants are in everyday life. We know that plants are used for everything from makeup to tires. What would we do without them? Your task today is to find 15 different uses for plants and list those uses in a table. Once you have created this list, in column 2 of your table, list a picture that you think would be a good example of a plant being used for this purpose. Once your table is complete and I have signed off on your 15 choices, it's time to go online and find the pictures that you have listed in column 2. Click and save the images onto your disk as you have done before. By the end of the period you should have all 15 images saved to disk as you will need them for part 2 of this assignment. Make sure to put a checkmark in column 3 for each picture you find today and turn in the table at the end of the period.
