Abstract  (help)

This lesson will complete the study of each of the 11 systems of the human body as a class. It will strengthen each students' understanding of a system that they are assigned, and through peer participation, they will be exposed to and learn about other body systems. The project itself is 3 parts: research, transformation and creation/presentation. In research (covered in this lesson) students will research one particular system of the body, in transformation they will take pertinent information and transform it into a "tour" of their system, and in creation/presentation they will turn their "tour" into a travel brochure and present it to the class. Prior to this lesson, it is imperative that students have a basic understanding of the cell and cell diversity, tissues and their functions and at least an overview of the systems themselves. Following this unit, I find it important to review each system in more detail as the lesson supports learning of the basics of each system and some detail, but student understanding of each system is usually not deep enough. Typically, I "fill in the gaps" to complete the necessary information. Students will acheive a greater learning and appreciation of the systems through their research and transformation of the information into a fun and creative format. They will see the complexity of the system and just how important each system is, and that they are linked to form a smooth operating organism.

National Standards  (help)

Scientists usually inquire about how physical, living, or designed systems function. Conceptual principles and knowledge guide scientific inquiries. Historical and current scientific knowledge influence the design and interpretation of investigations and the evaluation of proposed explanations made by other scientists.

Pre-requisite Skills  (help)

For this lesson of the unit, students will have needed to complete their research questions from Lesson 1 of this unit, as well as the travel brochure writeup from Lesson 2. Computer skills will be needed for this segment of the lesson, if the technology approch is used. Computer skills will not be needed if the alternative assessment (low tech) approach is used. Desktop publishing skills helpful. Familiarity with a program such as Adobe Pagemaker, Printshop Deluxe, or even Kid Pix are useful. Some art skills will be necessary to complete the travel brochure, complete with pictures or representative pictures.

Teacher Information  (help)

In this segment, students will incorporate their brochure writeup with artwork to create a real "travel brochure". Pictures for the brochure are most easily found on the web. As the teacher, you need to make a decision if you would like the pictures to be authentic organ pictures or representative pictures of the jobs performed by the organ (eg. the heart could be a picture of an oil derrick). Since the students have already created an entry for each organ of their system, they simply need to cut and paste it into the brochure along with the picture. Print Shop Deluxe even has a template for brochures that is simple to use.

Assessment  (help)

Assessment of this lesson is based on the completion of the brochure. Typically, I grade on the following: -One entry for each organ of the system -Picture or representative picture on each page -Complete writeup for each "stop" on the tour -Points for creativity

Student Activity  (help)

Here is the handout given to my students: Tongue to Toe Tours - Part 2 Hey! The boss loved your piece on the system! He said that you did such a great job at the writeup, that he'd really like to see what you could do with the Art and Design of the brochure. Now he'd like you to take your write-up and create a brochure that the tourists can use, complete with pictures! Here are the guidelines for the brochure: -Make sure that you give each organ in your system it's own page. Use your write-up, add a picture and be creative! -Create a logo for the company to use on their brochures -Double check that there are no typographical or grammar errors -Be creative! Use color, different fonts, eye-catching pictures. Remember, you're selling a tour here! You're on the fast track to promotion now! GOOD LUCK!
