Components (help)


Lesson 1 Title: History of the Buffalo Soldiers – Early Years What do you want the students to learn? Students will use research techniques to gather information to become knowledgeable with the forming and missions of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments (Buffalo Soldiers). The learner will become aware of the ethnic diversity that influenced the development of our country. How will the students learn this? How will you assess this? Students will create KWL charts. They will read Chapters 1-4 of Buffalo Soldiers by Leckie and Buffalo Soldier by Len C. Murray. They will add to their KWL charts as needed and use the Internet to gather more information. The class will then be divided into learning groups and share the information they’ve found. Students will then make presentations from their research in a variety of forms such as written reports, posters, mobiles etc. Assessment will be teacher/student critiques and evaluations. Lesson 2 Title: Buffalo Soldiers – Ft. Leavenworth (Early 1930’s and 1940’s) What do you want the students to learn? Students will become familiar with the contributions of Buffalo Soldiers at Fort Leavenworth during the 1930’s and 1040’s. The lesson will identify the role of Afro-Americans in the development of our country, specifically the Fort Leavenworth military community. How will the students learn this? How will you assess this? Students will develop QAR questions after they read the publication (Interviews) by Maj. George E. Knapp – Buffalo Soldiers at Fort Leavenworth in the 1930’s and early 1940’s. Students will also visit the Buffalo Soldier Monument. These questions will be used to create an interview list to ask former Buffalo Soldiers of that era. Once the interview is complete, the students will make a presentation to the class in a variety of formats such as role-play, mobile, poem, A-B-C book etc. Assessment will be teacher evaluation. Lesson 3 Title: Female Buffalo Soldier – Cathay Williams What do you want the students to learn? Students will research the contribution, service, and impact of the female Buffalo Soldier, Cathay Williams. How will the students learn this? How will you assess this? Students will begin and complete a KWL chart and research Cathay Williams with the Internet sites provided. Students will then divide into 5 learning groups to discuss and share information. Students will then have a choice between three activities such as to write and illustrate a first person biographical journal of Cathay Williams life as a female Buffalo Soldier; A debate on whether she should have been allowed to serve as a soldier and why or why not?, and was her discharge and denial of benefits from the US Army fair or unfair? Why or why not? Assessment: Teacher should advise students of expectations and monitor progress of research and presentations. As activities are developed, students also should have input in evaluation of final products. Lesson 4 Title: How are we honoring Buffalo Soldiers and why? What do you want the students to learn? Students will be able to critically examine why and how heroes are honored. How will the students learn this? How will you assess this? Students will brainstorm various ideas for why and how Buffalo Soldiers should be honored based upon their previous research . Students will then write a short essay on why we do and should honor these soldiers. Students will then create a momento to these soldiers such as a sculpture, picture, coin, plaque, poster, song etc. Assessment: will be the teacher should explain expectations, monitor progress, and create an evaluation with the students for the final product.
